Dedicated Spectrum - S-Band

Solaris Mobile enables mobile service providers to operate in a dedicated range of S-Band spectrum in the 2 GHz range. This spectrum is exclusively reserved for Mobile Satellite Services and may be used in a hybrid network arrangement, combining satellite and terrestrial transmission systems. Solaris Mobile’s S-Band space segment is hosted on Eutelsat’s W2A satellite located at 10°E l in geostationary orbit and covering Europe. Uniquely, Solaris Mobile has been awarded the rights to 15MHz+15MHz of paired spectrum in all 27 EU Member States providing a rare opportunity to coordinate services across all of Europe in the same unencumbered spectrum range. MSS S-Band is directly adjacent to the UMTS which carry 3G mobile broadband services.

Easy Integration

Operating in S-Band has many advantages already used by existing mobile network operators such as small antenna and small form factor handsets, good indoor penetration, good atmospheric propagation, good performance at high speed, low power transmission and low noise floor in relatively interference free and unencumbered spectrum. In addition, S- Band enables very wide area coverage from satellite creating a hybrid network topology and 15MHz + 15MHz of harmonised availability across the 27 EU member states. The 2 GHz S-Band frequency spectrum sits alongside the UMTS standard already used across Europe for 3G terrestrial services. Solaris Mobile can therefore complement existing mobile infrastructures and handsets, delivering new services and wide coverage cost-effectively.

Flexible Networks = Total Coverage

Uniquely, S-Band technology creates the possibility of a single network spanning all of Europe – from stand alone applications to hybrid satellite terrestrial installations. In urban areas, terrestrial transmitters take over from satellite to provide effective indoor coverage. Elsewhere, vehicles and residential gateways can receive signals direct from the satellite. Solaris Mobile is enabling the first hybrid infrastructure in Europe combining line-of-sight S-band signals with terrestrial repeaters to reach the urban landscape. The advantage of using a hybrid network allows for broad coverage across the continent and rapid service deployment due to satellite capabilities. The terrestrial wireless systems allows for the signal to penetrate buildings in cities and large urban areas. This enables the delivery of crystal clear Live TV to mobile handsets, in-car entertainment and info systems and wide-ranging communications & data services.

Terminals - Pocket Gateway

The Solaris Mobile Pocket Gateway is a pocket sized S-Band receiver which decodes DVB-SH TV, radio & data streams and relays them over WiFi via an in-built mini web server in the device. This technology allows any compatible smart phone with WiFi and a web browser to access mobile TV and radio over Solaris Mobile’s hybrid network without modification. The development has been achieved in conjunction with company Elektrobit and resolves the issue of how to manage the introduction of mobile phones with S-Band reception. In addition, the Solaris Mobile Pocket Gateway may be used in the car by linking to a roof-mounted antenna and providing passenger entertainment on mobile phones.

Quantum Receiver

Solaris Mobile can deliver a new communications infrastructure for millions of cars in Europe through a Quantum Car Receiver. This device is built to meet European auto standards and allows for two way data communications through a USB port. Our satellite technology uses antennas embedded within vehicles to optimize reception enabling commuters to receive mobile real time TV and internet radio with up to 10 TV channels and 50 -100 radio stations at digital quality.
